This is a rare image which was purportedly taken in 1911 offer postcard views of Niagara Falls completely frozen over. It circulated by email from aprox. 2003.
It is said to be fake, however…. The flow of water was stopped completely over both falls on March 29th 1848 due to an ice jam in the upper river for several hours. This is the only known time to have occurred. The Falls did not actually freeze over, but the flow was stopped to the point where people actually walked out and recovered artifacts from the riverbed!
Niagara had frozen again in 1936. (the last time for quite a while i might add…).

This is NOT a fake… The Water has NOT frozen, and still runs UNDER the ice… It’s called the ICE BRIDGE. You can see the 3 or 4 small waterfall-lettes springing out of the ice… Due to technologies implemented for power etc (and maybe global warming too!) the ICE BRIDGE (above or below the falls) rarely occurs these days…

Why do stupid people talk about things without proper knowledge? Without even bothering to do something as simple as look at an easily accessible atlas?

Toronto is 81.87 mi or ~131 km from Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls spans across both Canada and the US, but NOT near Toronto.

niagara falls is nowhere near toronto and the falls itself is on the US side. It is considered ot be in canada because it is better viewing on the canadian side.

For the person who said the falls are in Toronto is just silly. Niagara Falls is it’s own city and the falls is considered on both US and CAN side. The view is much better on CAN than US side which is why there is far more commercialization on CAN side.

Actually the falls that most people go to see David, are in Canada. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_Falls)
The only falls on the American side are called American Falls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Falls)
Horseshoe Falls are also much larger, so David you are wrong.

russel says:
sorry joel but the horseshoe falls are mostly in canada, which means that part of it still lies within US territory, sharing a connected point to goad island, NY. Seeing that it’s considered a bridge between the 2 countries makes it obvious. It’s mostly in canadian territory but some of it still lies within US territories. Your trying to prove a detail by using generalized statements.
So please try to understand the documents you reference before you actually shove them into people’s faces and offer them as proof.

Smarter than smartest says:
Be sure you can spell before you accuse others of being idiots! The word THEN applies to a specific time - the word THAN should be used in your sentence:
“…or something better to do with your time THAN argue what side…”
When you point your finger there are 3 more pointing back at yourself!

Ok..I am a security guard ..and it’s about 2:45am here…I was on one of the sites that the company hasn’t blocked just for kicks and it had a lot of random stupid facts on it and then said that you should research them to see if they are true. One of them was that the falls froze over in 1932. Well, I thought I would do that one…I found that it froze over in 1911…that was the last time it will ever freeze like that. I wish that it would do it again. I wish that I could see it. I know that there is no way though that the entire thing (US and Canada side) could COMPLETLY freeze. It may have froze a lot but to entirely freeze…????

THE LAST TIME THE FALLS COMPLETELY STOPPED WAS IN 1848. There were ice bridges for several years after that, including 1911 but it never stopped in 1911. Here is some proof to back up my statement.

Not an April Fools’ joke: Finally, to cap off the foolishness, on April 29, 1848, Niagara Falls stopped flowing for 30 hours. This was due to an ice jam further upstream.

You are all nuts besides Katy. She is right, Niagara Falls is about an hour to an hour and a half from Toronto. I have lived in both places before. And it’s not in Buffalo either, that is a totally different city as well.

Niagara falls actually is three separate waterfalls. The American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls “fall” off the side of Niagara Falls, NY (a city near Buffalo, NY). The Horseshoe Falls “fall” 2/3 within Canadian territory in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. The final 1/3 of the Horseshoe Falls technically lie within US territory. If you ever get the chance to see them, take it - they are amazing - and loud. Stay in Canada if you can - you will have a better experience.
