A first for the general public, the picture of the “mushroom cloud is a very accurate approximation of the enormous quantity of energy spread below. The first atomic bomb, released on August 6 in Hiroshima (Japan) killed about 80,000 people, but it didn’t seem enough because the Japanese didn’t surrender right away. Therefore, on August 9 another bomb was released above Nagasaki. The effects of the second bomb were even more devastating - 150,000 people were killed or injured. But the powerful wind, the extremely high temperature and radiation caused enormous long term damage.

You fncking idiot.
First of all, if the dumbass Japs didn’t attack out of nowhere then the Americans wouldn’t have had to resort to such measures.
Second, the Japs have always been militaristic and agressive in nature evident from their sudden agressive attacks Pearl Harbor and China.
If anything, they deserved to have their asses bombed.

Lookin` from outside (nor American nor “Jap”) i think the US launched that bomb (the second and bigger) for another reason, not killin` people .
Is all about POWER. (over the world)
Nagasaki was just “in the wrong place at the wrong time” .. nothin` more. Sooner or later, if not “Japs” , they will sacrifice someone to show to the world who`s the most powerfull.
It`s sad that manny people died, but for them (US) is a price for a victory in world`s eyes.

I agree- no reason to drop the bomb. The “Japs” were looking to surrender and we knew it because we’d cracked their diplomatic codes. They had no air force left, and no invasion was needed- no “million Americans” dead, as the myth goes.
It was all just, like Alex said, a power game. Had to show the world we had nukes and were willing to use them. They also wanted to keep those damn evil communists from taking over a few more miles of Korea.
None of it’s an excuse for thousands of horrible deaths and the world’s most dangerous precedent being set.

Put what upon themselves? The “Japs” attacked a military object, the US attacked a civilian object — a city. There’s a world of a difference here.

Correct; this was the beginning of the Cold War, and you’ll have to thank US for that. It didn’t end a war, it merely transitioned one into another phase, a phase we’re still somewhat in even today.

Reason says:
abcdefg, using your logic then it also stands to reason that you must support the terrorist attacks of 9/11 against Americans? I mean, you wouldn’t want to appear hypocritical and, afterall, to use your logic:
- Americans have been overtly and covertly attacking people in the middle east for decades. The USAs complete stubborness on the Israel/Palestine issue is most likey the root cause of the vast majority of unrest in the middle east. Not to mention the US has been playing different factions against one another so as to amass the largest amount casualties and create chaos in the region.
- Second, the [Americans] have always been militaristic and agressive in nature evident from their sudden agressive attacks [in Cuba, Laos, Panama, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan, etc].
So, as you see, your blanket statement of “If anything, they deserved to have their asses bombed” is a two-sided street… hopefully you will see that in the future and try a little compasion and understanding of, if not others, at least your own situation.
The people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki deserved this no more or less than those that died on 9/11 and all of these events are completely deplorable acts, regardless of the ideals or country of origin of the people that committed them.

Its is a BIG shame on humanity that one human race can do such a thing to another human race.
Humans are very distructive & have always fought with each others for various reasons.
But nowadays, actualy since 6 august 1945, war can be unfair and 1 country can destroy an entire race/ country/ continent with as 1 bomb.
This Cannot be accepted and from this day onnn, all countries should agree that the next bomb that is thrown at another country for what ever reason, should be retaliated for 400percent. This means 1 a/bomb by the us on egg. australia. The every country should throw 2 a/bombs on the US.
We shoudl all agree TO KILL THE KILLERS and hope that this will prevent these situations.
On topic: As an american that is now living in Europe I am VERY ASHAMED for the pictue above… So should ALLL OTHER HUMANS BE!!!

Thnkredd says:
How absolutely closed minded and rude it is of (most of) you to imply that ALL Americans are the same and that all of us are for war. Had some of you been paying attention to American Politics, you’d know that a majority are AGAINST war, and DO NOT agree with our president about being in a war. I am not happy with all of the innocent people being killed. Nor am I happy that we have military troops over there - soldiers being killed for doing their job. MOST of them did not sign up just to go to war. They went into the military for a steady job, steady pay check to provide for their families. Unfortunately war is a sad side effect of being in the military. You act as though they all enjoy killing people. Imagine having to go through life knowing you killed someONE…or even multiple people. I personally would find it hard to live with myself. (Unless you are one of those grotesque people that does get a thrill out of murder.) America is NOT the only country involved in war and certainly not the one always picking a fight.
As far as being “On Topic” about this picture, I agree with Johney USA. All of humanity should be ashamed of themselves for what they have done.

Kaijuu says:
I think a lot of the “they got what they deserved”-followers should go and visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki for themselves, see the monuments, read the stories from the people who survived and read up on history while they’re at it.
The dropping of Little Boy on Hiroshima was more or less a necessity; I believe that, all things considered, the war wouldn’t have ended as quickly as it did, hadn’t the US not showed what they were prepared to do.
Also, the Japanese have been doing horrible things during the war, to both military and civilians. Putting an end to that was something that needed to be done.
However, dropping Fat Man on Nagasaki (or Kokura, for that matter; Kokura was the primary target and saved from disaster due to cloudy weather) was unaccounted for and completely unnecessary in my opinion.
Yes, I visited both Nagasaki and Hiroshima several times; they are cities with beautiful surroundings and a mark in history.
The picture is stunning, and a good reminder of what can never happen again.

War is wrong, that is fact. In agreement with Thnkredd, not all Americans agree with what their government (Bush) is doing, or like wars, and I must point out that only half of the U.S. voted to reelect Bush, and many of those people wish they hadn’t done so. I do not agree with what my country is doing in Iraq, or what occurred in this picture. I for one am counting down the days until our government has lost certain individuals. I am ashamed of what my country did with the bombings, and please stop generalizing all of America, as war supporters, who want to conquer the world. That is mostly Bush, and his supporters.

Michael says:
Yeah Japan was attacking military and civilian targets. And I regret that the atomic bombs became necessary, but I think that they might have been necessary. Whoever said that an invasion of Japan wasn’t necessary, because they were already beaten, is just not telling the truth. The battle for Okinawa, the closest island battle to japan, was one of the most devastating. thats because the japanese refused to give up. an insanely high percentage of the japanese on that island fought to the death. there were almost no prisoners. even when they knew that they couldnt win okinawa, they still fought to the death. thats because it was so close to japan. if we had to invade japan (and we would have to win the war and not use an a-bomb), hundreds of thousands, if not millions of American lives would have been lost, let alone the Japanese lives that would have been lost as well. The only way to avoid this invasion was the bombs. And after we dropped the first one and killed so many people, the japanese STILL didnt give up! this shows you how crazy and dedicated they were! they knew we could keep bombing them. they knew the losses they would suffer. and yet they defied us. they challenged us. so we were left with no other decision but to bomb them again. and you say that it wasnt fair because we bombed civilian targets. thats true, that is a very regrettable situation. and i never would want to kill anyone. but where were our soldiers a year, a month, a day before pearl harbor? thats right, they were mostly civilians. japan forced our civilians to join the military. so if you look at it that way, they killed so many of our civilians, but they made them put on uniforms first.

Dave says:
There are a lot of thoughts going through my head right now, but I’ll try to lay them out in a manner that makes some sense.
First of all, there’s a big difference between modern day Japan and the Empire of Japan in 1945. It was a racist, aggressive, imperialistic state bent on world domination and on par with Nazi Germany in pure villainy. War is hell and it’s regrettable that people die. However, no one is completely innocent in a war. Civilians have the power to change their government, and even in an imperial society, they support the war through taxes, food, and supplies, whether they like it or not. I’m not saying I approve of targeting civilians, but the “smart weapons” of today didn’t exist back then, so occasionally it was necessary.
The United States in 1941 was also very different from the military industrial complex that is the United States today. The United States did not start World War 2; They were dragged reluctantly into it, and then they finished it as quickly as they could. The world, including Japan, is better off because the US finished the war.
PS. Tony, if Japan wasn’t stopped, Australia would have been invaded next.
KraX, you’re an idiot. Please do not breed.

eh i have to disagree with you people saying it was wrong.. first of all it was not wrong.. if you research it even after the bombings japan did not utter the words of surrender… because they didnt want unconditional surrender. they were hoping that the US would invade the Japanese. so that the Japanese could hold out a little longer and create a deal with the US. Also if this was the case look at the casualities of onikiawa and iwo jima. those casualties would have been a million times worse if the US invaded Japan…and many US lives were saved and also many Japanese lives were saved….think about if if the US public found out we had a bomb that could have saved lives and ended the war and we didnt use it what would happen? CHAOS. Also it was a power game the US did use the bombings of Japan to also show its power. WHY? because the Soviets were gaining a lot of power in Europe. And the US had to put them in their place in order to keep them from going crazy.

Technically civilians died in the Pearl Harbor bombings, and lots of them. They concentrated on both military and supportive area, eg, hospitals, airports, part manufacturers based on the island. So there were civilian casualties on both sides.
Kaijuu- The lesson of this horrible event should not be a debate about what is required and what is excessive but to treat others as you wish to be treated. I realize that these cities were wiped out, entire families lost, societies ruined but what was the expected actions from the Japanese side when they invaded? They failed to look into what may or may not happen their country as a whole and this should be the direction of these memorials…..not the US using excessive force.
Lety- Do you honestly think Americans feel regret over our history? We’re not a nation full of people who roll over for anyone, we’re tough as nails and we’re itching to prove it….especially when assaulted!
Reason- While things sound good in your head they often loose a lot of luster as they’re presented as others do not see the same sides as dwindling thoughts. The Japanese situation was a result of an act of War against our nation and those people died as a consequence of those actions.
The 9/11 attacks were not a result of an act of war but as a result of differing ideologies; as you imply that we are the result of the Middle Eastern conflict, when in reality it was Osama the sweaty flea infested Arabian along with the under-servents.

The US may have killed many innocent civilians, but it was a necessary risk in order to win a war that the US could not lose. Had the US lost this war, the world we know now might not be here. The US had the chance to end a war and took that chance. This was not just about the bombings of Japan, but was about chaning the fate of humankind. Had the US choose to do nothing and let Hitler and the Japanese do as they please, many of us might not even be alive to disscuss this issue. Both parties were hell bent on taking over the world at no expense to human lives. If England or France had the chance to end the war in the same manner, I’m sure they would have done the same. This was not about right or wrong, it was about ending a war.
