Kent State [1970]

The news that Richard Nixon was sending troops to Cambodia caused a chain of protests in the U.S. colleges. At Kent State the protest seemed more violent, some students even throwing rocks. In consequence, The Ohio National Guard was called to calm things down, but the events got out of hand and they started shooting. Some of the victims were simply walking to school, and, more dramatically, one wasn’t even a student, but a 14 year old runaway. Mary Ann Vecchio was sent to her family in Florida and her death was commemorated in a TV movie and a Neil Young song.

Makes you have to question the legitimacy of the other comments made on this site…Is the oldest known photo (as claimed here) REALLY the oldest known photo???

I believe Mary Ann Vecchio is the name of the woman grieving in the photo, not the name of the slain man.

I know the history on almost all these pictures because I’ve studied them at great length. incorrect cutlines can turn a photographer into a liar at the hands of someone else describing their work. It doesn’t take that long to research the history of a photo, especially with the internet. Please, at least do the photographer justice by properly retelling their history. And thanks to those who also posted links as to the “aliveness” of Vecchio.

John Filo’s Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of Mary Ann Vecchio, a fourteen-year-old runaway and Vietnam War protester, screaming with anguish and kneeling over the dead body of Jeffrey Miller, shot through the mouth by an unknown Ohio National Guardsman. The Vecchio portion of the photograph appeared on the May 18, 1970 cover of Newsweek magazine with the banner “Nixon’s Home Front.”

its funny that there are a bunch of horrifying photos, taken at horrifying moments, and all the photographer does is take a picture, instead of helping.

This is the first time that I had ever known the girl’s name and the dead man in front of her! So, awesome! But I had no idea she was only 14. I never heard anything about her being deceased. I think she’s still alive or something. Thanks giving these people a name now. I never knew til now.

Matt says:

But if the photographer had ran for cover or helped or something, would the Kent State shootings (or any other picture worthy event) be remembered as they were? Without the visual, most events lose a lot of relevance and weight.

At least that’s how I feel.

Well said, Matt.
If every photographer goes on engaging in ’scene intervevtion’, then the bosses won’t pay him. But I believe most of them do what they can to ease the situation, after doing their duty which is clicking pix, like the case of Nick who photographed Kim Phuc.

it IS rather a shame that there are ANY mistakes in dealing with the issue of the KENT STATE shootings. these four deaths should NEVER…as in EVER…have ANY MISTAKES EVER brought up in ANY sentace…paragraph..or phrase. if you are NOT SURE…STAY AWAY….I WAS THERE.

I’m doing a report on Kent State right now for my History class. If you want to learn more about the tragedy, I would definitely recommend reading “Kent State: What Happened and Why” by James A. Michener.
