This is probably Canada’s most famous picture. The Oka Crisis was a land dispute between the Mohawk nation and the town of Oka, Quebec which began on March 11 1990, and lasted until September 26 1990. It resulted in three deaths, and would be the first of a number of violent conflicts between Indigenous people and the Canadian Government in the late 20th century.

Great photo! I couldn’t imagine the intensity of being nearby them two. Maybe this photo should represent the Iraq war stating to ‘talk’ instead of ‘fight’.

Umm George? Do your research before saying something like that. The “Indigenous” is standing up for something that matters, his land, whereas the soldier is “following orders”…as usual. Try checking the dictionary for the word “Indigenous” maybe you’ll understand a little bit about why they are fighting. Thats why I care. Think twice next time about saying something like that. You sound so racist. I don’t know why they would let you post that comment in the first place. They never thought a Native person would visit this site or maybe they don’t think we know how to uses computers too…..??

Who erased my previous comment??? I have a problem with George’s comment! I am indigenous and I wrote a comment before about his racial comment and I am wondering why his was posted and why mine was erased???? YES Its a great photo….but no need for the racism here!!!!!!!! And I give a damn….George please do your research before making racial slurs. Ok???

these 2 were not talking the mohawk indian was taunting and provoking the soldier i totally do not support the mohawk and what they did at oka. Oka didnt help anyone and the mohawk warriors were told by the rest of the native indians not to go violent but they didnt listen and landed in jail and canadians having a grim out look on all aboriginals because a small dim witted group thought it would save their land, WRONG and now the rest of the aboriginal people have 2 pay. oh well.

NELLIE says:
First of all “mohawk indian” is not a word. Indians for your information are from India! And there is no such thing as Native Indians also. I totally do not support what they wanted to build on traditional burial grounds of the Mohawks….a golf course!!! One word, GREED. The Mohawk people helped a lot of people, they helped many other aboriginal nations to stand up for themselves. Nice choice of words there…dim witted group, its a very nice way of saying stupid. Typical. I could argue with you for as long as it takes, however there is no point in arguing with racists. Thats how they were brought up. I am Cree and I don’t feel in anyway that I am paying for what the Mohawks did, in fact I applaud there efforts. More Aboriginal people need to stand up to greedy people.
And many are, for your information…OH WELL.
