Star forming pillars in the Eagle Nebula, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope’s FPC2. These eerie, dark pillar-like structures are actually columns of cool interstellar hydrogen gas and dust that are also incubators for new stars. The pillars protrude from the interior wall of a dark molecular cloud like stalagmites from the floor of a cavern.

the Hubble instrument was the WFPC2 (wide-field planetary camera). It’s true that stars are forming in the dark pillars and the rest of the molecular cloud, but that formation process is being cut short by the ionizing radiation from a massive luminous star that was already born inside the nebula. The dark dusty molecular hydrogen is being photo-evaporated, so that proto-stars embedded within will have their supply of cold gas cut off.

The one thing that annoys me with photos like this from NASA, that you can usually only read in a small footnote somewhere, is that they all use fake colour. This is not how they actually look…

Absolutely right Brendan.. Look at the cool starry effect on a pink star. And there’s a halo around the pillar in spectacular colors.. Nonsense..! The PR people from NASA are targetting a void. It repels real scientists who want the right info (not some cheap fake photos) and it attracts dumb people who have no interest in astronomy. I saw this picture in one of my colleagues desktop. I asked her what this was. She replied “the northern lights in Antartica”.. Enuf said.

to brendans comment:
they color the film because alot of these gases you cannot see…so just because its colored doesnt mean it doesnt exists and doesnt take away anything from the picture,…most of the pictures on here are black and white…and they are famous…but thats not what they looked like in real life either….blows your theory out of the water…

I don’t think that the absence or integrated color in this photograph should take anything away from the picture itself, and the feeling it creates when you stare into it.

Look, at the end of the day, this image is on here because of the ‘image’ itself. Not the scientific information behind it.
Look at ‘The tourist guy’ Photo. I do not agree with this editing I think it is a tad unnessessary. But it is on here so people can appreshiate…
(dont even bother commenting on the spelling, i know loads of this is probably wrong lol)
…The technical side of the image. I have bee using photoshop for a number of years and it is very well done. I may dissagree with the content, but i still think it is a very good piece of work.
And to be honest, if you are going to complain about the ‘Eagle Nebula’ image… Lets see the pictures you have taken of it…

THIS ISN’T REALLY A FAKE PICTURE! It can actually be considered a true picture. The colors represent its chemicals. So even though the nebula would be all red or some color to the naked eye, if we could see the nebula for what its really worth then it would look this spectacular. The picture is enhaced to show what its made of.
