Born Twice [1999]

An experimental – and controversial – procedure for treating a crippling birth defect in the womb offered Trish and Mike Switzer the only chance that their daughter would walk like other children. But the fetal surgery posed a fatal dilemma: Their baby could die before she was born.

Photographer Max Aguilera saiud about this photo: “During a spina bifida corrective procedure at twenty-one weeks in utero, Samuel thrusts his tiny hand out of the surgical opening of his mother’s uterus. As the doctor lifts his hand, Samuel reacts to the touch and squeezes the doctor’s finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shakes the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. At that moment, I took this “Fetal Hand Grasp” photo.

As a photojournalist, my job is to tell stories through pictures. The experience of taking this photograph has had a profound effect on me, and I’m proud to share this moment with you”

I’m not really sure about this but from what i remember, after this picture abortions were banned in UK. Please correct me if i’m wrong.

You are wrong - abortions have been legal in the UK for several decades now (I think the 60s) and there’s little movement to try to change that. The picture isn’t widely known and certainly had no effect on abortion law which makes it legal to abort up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, I believe. It is, however, a great photo.

that must be an incredible child! undergoing surgery like that…on his SPINE….without ANESTHESIA!?!?!?

heelllllooo. the baby was asleep or else it would have died from shock and bleed out. there’s no way the baby “reached out” or “held firm” to the doctor’s hand.

Abortion is legal in the UK up to the 24th week of pregnancy. However, if there is a substantial risk to the woman’s life or if there are foetal abnormalities there is no time limit.

To comply with the 1967 Abortion Act, two doctors must give their consent, stating that to continue with the pregnancy would present a risk to the physical or mental health of the woman or her existing children.

However, the 1967 Act does not extend to Northern Ireland, where abortion is still illegal.

While they were repairing the child’s spine/spinal cord the arm popped out. The picture actually is of the doctor starting to tuck it back in so he could sew everything back up. No matter the story behind it, it is a beautiful picture showing that no matter how small, it is life.

Im sorry but why is this line in here “Trish and Mike Switzer the only chance that their daughter would walk” if the rest of the post talks about the baby being male?

The picture is awesome and will stay with you for days or even more but the whole write up is screwy for it.

The picture you have posted was taken by Max Aguilerra-Hellweg for Life Magazine but the comment is mine. Your picture is of Sarah Marie Switzer at 24 weeks in utero. Some of your text is from the Life Magazine story “Born Twice.” That picture is amazing, but clearly posed. I took the picture of Samuel Armas reaching from the womb at 21 weeks in utero.

michaelclanc...

The same doctor was in both pictures: Dr. Joseph Bruner. He does claim that Samuel was under anesthesia and could not have reached out but if you click the picture on my homepage you can judge for yourself. The controversy continues but the doctor has lost his job because of my picture. He was the pioneer of this procedure and no longer involved in fetal surgery. He’s an incredible surgeon but ne simply could not admit the unborn child came out from under the anesthesia too soon. Search Google for Samuel Armas

abortion legal in UK???? ha ha.. since when??? NEVER!! i know, trust me. ONLY in the case that it’s threatening the mothers life… i don’t understand why people make themselves look stupid by saying crazy things they know nothing about.

“Abortion is allowed in England, Wales and Scotland only to save a woman’s life, for health, economic or social reasons. Two registered medical practitioners must certify that the required medical grounds have been met. “

“and after the birth how was the child?”
No worries, Tudor. She was born just fine. They needed to open the fetus, or she would be born with serious birth deffects.

This picture is truly amazing, but just to remind you, abortions are done in a much younger stage of the pregnancy. I’d say this fetus is more than 25 weeks old, while most abortions take place at 13 weeks or earlier.
