This is probably Canada’s most famous picture. The Oka Crisis was a land dispute between the Mohawk nation and the town of Oka, Quebec which began on March 11 1990, and lasted until September 26 1990. It resulted in three deaths, and would be the first of a number of violent conflicts between Indigenous people and the Canadian Government in the late 20th century.

  1. Like Andy I also think that george was being sarcastic, but as a latino i understand where you’re coming from, the other guy aaron is talking out of his ass. My ancestors felt the opresion and they were slaughtered by the spanish, by the french and by the new country who by the way identifies it self as america, like canada weren’t on america, like mexico weren’t on america, where’d you get off by calling yourselfs american, who granted you the title, but Oh Well like they said, it was our country you stole it never forget it

  2. I’m Swedish, American, Australian and I don’t know the details of this perticular conflict but to me it seems like the more resonable course of action would be to spend more money on lawyers and less on automatic rifles. Contend the decision in court and protest with signs rather than with rifles, cammo and hiding your identity. As for the racism comments; 1 Geneticly speaking there is only one human race. 2 Generalisations about any perticular group of people are never completley accurate. 3 Austalia is a very multicultural country and gets by very well without people yelling “Racist” wenever they are insulted by someone of a different cultural background.

    BTW Awesome photo!

  3. I think the indeginous people should be put back in their place. THey murdered a cop who had a family, they shot first, they murdered him. Nelli shut up

  4. I never understood that attitude of “we against you”. The Aboriginals against “us”. We are one of the extremely rare countries where there is a legal difference given to “aboriginals”. I never understood why there should be any…
That whole Oka Crisis was extremism. And the medias showed it worste then it really was.

  5. Itz a sweet deadly picture…it showz that we dont give up. We stand and show we care about each other. We care. I love it. lol

  6. I am a proud Aboriginal. I fight for my own rights. and this Oka Crisis is BS! its just a gulf course! i would want to die for such thing. I wouldnt. I feel their pain when i read Ad’s i feel their pain when i hear some news about The Oka Standoff. I am 16 years old, honestly i would go crazy if i was their i would tell tell Canadian Army Force to back off you guys dont know what you dealing with here….like holy come on it was wasting their time. Im sad for them. Im Sad for my people that went through such disaster. We are one. We are strong. We will never let go.
    Truly yours: PROUD NATIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. First of all “mohawk indian” is not a word. Indians for your information are from India! And there is no such thing as Native Indians also. I totally do not support what they wanted to build on traditional burial grounds of the Mohawks….a golf course!!! One word, GREED. The Mohawk people helped a lot of people, they helped many other aboriginal nations to stand up for themselves. Nice choice of words there…dim witted group, its a very nice way of saying stupid. Typical. I could argue with you for as long as it takes, however there is no point in arguing with racists. Thats how they were brought up. I am Cree and I don’t feel in anyway that I am paying for what the Mohawks did, in fact I applaud there efforts. More Aboriginal people need to stand up to greedy people.

And many are, for your information…OH WELL.

  8. these 2 were not talking the mohawk indian was taunting and provoking the soldier i totally do not support the mohawk and what they did at oka. Oka didnt help anyone and the mohawk warriors were told by the rest of the native indians not to go violent but they didnt listen and landed in jail and canadians having a grim out look on all aboriginals because a small dim witted group thought it would save their land, WRONG and now the rest of the aboriginal people have 2 pay. oh well.

  9. Who erased my previous comment??? I have a problem with George’s comment! I am indigenous and I wrote a comment before about his racial comment and I am wondering why his was posted and why mine was erased???? YES Its a great photo….but no need for the racism here!!!!!!!! And I give a damn….George please do your research before making racial slurs. Ok???

  10. Umm George? Do your research before saying something like that. The “Indigenous” is standing up for something that matters, his land, whereas the soldier is “following orders”…as usual. Try checking the dictionary for the word “Indigenous” maybe you’ll understand a little bit about why they are fighting. Thats why I care. Think twice next time about saying something like that. You sound so racist. I don’t know why they would let you post that comment in the first place. They never thought a Native person would visit this site or maybe they don’t think we know how to uses computers too…..??

  11. Great photo! I couldn’t imagine the intensity of being nearby them two. Maybe this photo should represent the Iraq war stating to ‘talk’ instead of ‘fight’.

  12. Es formidable k un pueblo sea capáz de pelear por lo k koncidera justo y no rendice ante la adversidad, la foto para mi, representa encarar los problemas y luchar por lo justo.
